house rules

Canterbury Tails is the full-time home of the cat crew, and we have a few rules to ensure their safety and wellbeing, and maintain a welcoming environment for furry friends and non-felines alike. You are a guest to their home and these rules are non-negotiable. We kindly ask that you take a moment to review our house rules before booking, as we want to ensure that everyone has a pleasant experience.

If you object in any way to these rules, please do not place a booking. We do not wish for guests to be disappointed with their experience. We reserve the right to refuse entry to or cut short a booking without refund should any guest be found breaking the rules, as this can compromise the safety of both the cat crew and guests. Thank you for your understanding!

Please don't pick up or chase the cats

You can pet and play with our cat crew if they’re awake and willing, and if a cat should choose to sit on you that is perfectly fine, but please do not pick them up, confine them, or chase them if they are walking away. If they cannot move freely in their own home they won't feel safe. In addition, our cats may respond negatively if picked up or held by people they don’t know.

Please don’t wake sleeping cats

Cats naturally sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, so there may be sleeping cats during your visit. Please let them sleep uninterrupted, after all - how would you feel if a stranger came into your home and interrupted your nap?
It can be harmful to their long-term welfare if they don’t get the sleep they require, so please let them snooze!

Please no people food!

They may act hungry, but they aren’t! The cat crew are fed twice a day on their custom blend of wet food enriched with supplements and vitamins, and constant access to breeder-standard crunchies throughout the day on each level should they feel peckish. Please don’t let them take any of your food or drink as it isn’t good for them, especially as some have special diets for sensitive stomachs.
Our drinks coasters double up as mug-caps and we have food covers available on request should you want to leave your food unattended at your table while exploring our cafe.
For the same reason, please ask before bringing food or treats for them when you visit, as their food is monitored for health reasons.

No flash photography

We absolutely encourage guests to take as many photos and videos of your visit as you like, but please remember to turn off the flash as cats have sensitive eyes and can be easily dazzled.

Age requirement of 8+

Kittens (human or feline) can be unpredictable, so to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both of our cat crew and all guests, children under the age of 8 are not permitted into the café area. This includes infants.

We require children under the age of 12 (8-11) to be accompanied by an adult, and we follow a strict 1 adult per 3 children ratio.

Bookings arriving with under-age group members will not be able to enter the cafe, and the booking would be non-refundable. This policy is non-negotiable to remain fair to all.

Please do not ask for exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your understanding.

More info on our age requirement can be found in our FAQs and see our full Refund Policy here.
